When I started The Handwriting Club in 2017, I fulfilled my childhood dream of having my own P.O. Box. I found over many years (since 2007!) that many readers from Shutterbean also love pens, paper and the magic of mail so decided to start inviting pen pals into my life. The internet was getting so busy with social media and as a result, I lost touch with who my readers were. No one had the same time to leave comments on posts because we turned into a LIKE BUTTON society. I was craving real connection and magic and a P.O. Box did just that.
I had no idea how much this would change my life and spirits!
Not long after I opened my P.O. Box, my mother died and I was FLOODED with cards and packages of support from my readers.
I felt so loved and cared for. My mother would have been so happy to see the kindness and generosity of strangers. A woman even made Cooper and me our own pajamas and cool blankets for our cats!
The best part is that I chose a P.O. Box in the post office my Mom used to take me to as a child so it feels even more special to pick things up there.
I have two large bins filled with letters from my P.O. Box that go back to 2017. I am hoping to share some of my letters here each week.
I think you’ll be delighted to see how thoughtful and creative people from my community of readers can be.
But most importantly, I hope this practice inspires you to send magic mail to someone in your life. You really can change the course of someone’s day with a surprise letter in their mailbox.
