One of the rules I’ve given myself using a Hobonichi planner is that THERE ARE NO RULES. My Hobonichi has become my visual diary, replacing my need for a separate sketchbook. It’s a blend of structure and creativity—a space where my right and left brain meet. Lists provide order, while colors and imagery invite play.
There’s freedom in already having a structured system for planning and tracking with my Intentions for the Week Planner and Currently Workbook.
Let me show you my daily creative practice—now in its third year!
One of my goals for 2024 was to move my body more and this helped remind me of that every time I opened up my planner. It was an image I printed out from my Pinterest.
Let’s break down my daily pages into categories, starting with food! I loved illustrating some of the meals I ate and blending food journaling into my planner.
(btw-I have a bunch of meal prep lists (almost every Sunday). You can see more of them in this post. )
Here are some of my favorite pages that include food:
Meal prep lists!
Here’s another good one:
My Valentine’s Day dinner was yummy.
I enjoyed Blueberry Buckwheat pancakes many times last year!
I like this page!
Kinda sloppy but oh well! Filled with kisses though!
This was a yummy meal and I got to hang out with my cousins!
I loved making little boxes and filling them in on my pages.
Hooray for sushi night.
Here’s what we had for Christmas Eve dinner:
I also did some food journaling and for a few spreads I used this little template:
Here are some of my favorite layouts I played around with- this one is filled with flowers.
I like writing the day on the top and making little boxes to anchor the page.
I think I did this on almost all of my pages.
I also use my label printer (for my Etsy shop) to print images out. All of them are sticker labels in black & white (because it’s a thermal printer).
This one I colored with a pen to make the water look like water.
A workshop I did!
Last year, we watched a lot of movies together on The Hope Circuit.
I had a good time printing the movie covers for my hobo.
One of my favorite movies:
A double feature night!
I also printed out the blog posts I published, which have been fun to look through!
Whenever I created a video or a fun graphic for one of my websites, I added it to my planner too.
It’s fun to look back and see what I was working on.
There are also quite a few pages that have black gesso all over them:
I LOOOOOOOOVE black gesso.
It can cover up any pen that bled through. It also covers up mistakes which is SO helpful. If I don’t like how a page looked I can start over and black it out.
Some other favorites:
A trip to Oregon!
Art date!
A banging dinner!
A beach trip.
Pulling cards & making notes,
Working on morning pages!
Life is ART!
Sometimes I write big. It usually means I’m filling information in after the fact. I try not to go more than 3 days without making an entry. Sometimes I’ll write notes on Post-its to keep track of what I did.
Some days have a lot of info!
It’s always fun to play with colors and stickers.
Some days are better than others.
I am happy my past self thought to make notes!
I’ll stop here because I don’t want to overwhelm you. This whole art journaling/calendar practice has been so good for my mind & soul. My handwriting and illustrations have improved with practice (YAY).
This year, I am using my polaroid printer to make my pages pretty. I’ll share some of my 2025 pages here and on my Instagram throughout the year. You can see more of my journaling supplies in my Amazon shop.
I hope this inspires you to create a daily art practice and leave a trail of magic too!
Love this! I have a question about your process and the timing of your journaling. Do you put your thoughts in at the end of the day to recap your day? Or just whenever you feel like picking it up? I feel like I use my Hobo Techo Cousin for "to-dos" and would love to make mine pretty like yours, but I can barely make myself pick it up off my work desk (and I'm not even really good at putting my daily to-dos in it). I'd love more inspiration about how to actually FORCE myself to write/draw/use this thing! lol 😏🤣
I just love all your pages!
